Leicester City put five past Newcastle United at the King Power Stadium, as they extend their fine form under Brendan Rodgers this season and Newcastle continue their poor performances as of late.
Ricardo Pereira's outstanding solo goal was the first of many for Leicester today. The Portuguese full back dribbled around a couple Newcastle players and drove the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Newcastle were still in the game at 1-0 with half time shortly approaching, although Isaac Hayden’s horrific follow through challenge on Dennis Praet meant Newcastle would’ve needed a miracle to get back into the game.
Leicester made the extra man advantage count with three goals in 10 second-half minutes.
Jamie Vardy managed to beat Newcastle goalkeeper Dubravka at his near post to double the lead and quickly after, a Paul Dummett deflection into his own net from a Leicester cross ensured The Foxes would take all three points.
Vardy added salt to the wounds with a simple headed goal, and Wilfried Ndidi capped a successful afternoon for Brendan Rodgers’ team.
Leicester continue their excellent start to the season
The victory on their home turf moved The Foxes into 3rd place and only 2 points behind Manchester City who sit in second.
Since Rodgers’ seven months ago, Leicester have been rejuvenated and are their dominance in their performances are replicating those from their title winning days in the 2015-16 season.
Despite the loss of Harry Maguire, Leicester’s new defender Soyuncu has been a rock at the back for them. Joelinton lacked service all game, a term used so far in every Newcastle game this season, but when he had the ball the Turkish international dominated him throughout the match.
Leicester were missing star man James Maddison through injury today, although you wouldn’t know it from their performance, but Youri Tielemans stepped up to the mark and was at the heart of Leicester’s creativity.
Are Newcastle doomed for relegation?
It’s still early days, however Newcastle have only performed won one game all season, and that was to a lacklustre Tottenham. Today they were shambolic- even with the introduction of Andy Carroll in the second half, the away side never looked like scoring all game.
To begin with they were defending very compact and organised, although following the sending off from Hayden meant nearly all the Newcastle players’ head dropped- Sean Longstaff is the only player who looked like he gave it his all today.
The 21-year-old appeared to be the only player in a black and white shirt who tried to give his all for the team. His hard work proved that when young players move through the academy of a club, they are willing to give their all every match.
Steve Bruce will be under enormous amounts of pressure to turn things around, but when a manager believes “the team have played well enough and out of the seven games we have played…in two of these games we haven’t got something out of it,” it must be distressing times for a Newcastle fan who are having to watch performances like the one today.
Furthermore, whether the team play well or not, £40million summer signing Joelinton has only scored 1 goal all season and if Newcastle have any hope of staying up, they’ll need goals from somewhere-can Andy Carroll become the goal scorer they’ve been craving?
Man of the match-Wilfried Ndidi (Leicester City)
A tricky one to choose due to the fact there were so many excellent performances from Leicester City players today-Vardy scored two and looked threatening all game, Pereira’s solo effort was exceptional and his work ethic up and down that right hand side was second to none.
However, late goal scorer Wilfried Ndidi produced one of his best games in a Leicester shirt- the Nigerian won nine tackles, five interceptions and retrieved the ball back 12 times to help his side win as comfortably as they did.
What’s next for both sides?
Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will face his old club on Saturday in a game which’ll be his first return to Anfield since being sacked following a draw against Everton in 2015.
Newcastle will face Manchester United, in a week’s time, at home in a must win match for both teams, as the two managers (Steve Bruce and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ) face scrutiny for recent poor performances.
