Jonjo Shelvey’s lone ranger effort wins a point for Newcastle, and saves them from losing to Manchester City, as the late goal see’s the game end 2-2.
City broke the deadlock through Raheem Sterling who finished a scruffy attack from the away side, but 3 minutes later Jetro Willems equalised to see the game finish at half time at one a piece.
With Manchester City piling on the pressure late on, cracks appeared in the home team’s pressing and with an exquisite touch using his chest, Belgium ace De Bruyne thumped the ball in off the underside of the cross bar and into the back of the net.
With 9 minutes left the game looked dead and buried…but Newcastle didn’t give up and from a Christian Atsu freekick, Shelvey ran onto the ball and curled it in past Ederson to win his side a well-deserved point.
Newcastle orchestrated a very organised, defensive set up and thwarted most of the City attacks successfully throughout the match-they made no big mistakes in the match and the quality of the goals conceded game show how well they performed without the ball.
On the ball, the likes of Alan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron occasionally threatened Manchester City’s backline despite only managing 23% possession- Paraguayan midfielder Almiron registered his first assist as a Newcastle player, for his ball to Willems in the first half.
Late goal scorer believed the 2-2 result was a fair outcome for both teams: “we thought we deserved a point…I think it’s a fair result.”
Shelvey also spoke on how a good performance was needed after his team’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa on Monday- “we needed to bounce back tonight after Monday and guarantee the clubs safety.”
A disheartened John Stones gave his view on the game: “We are disappointed…but we need to keep fighting.”
“It’s frustrating-we were on a high and a low so quickly.”
Lacklustre City fail to close gap on Liverpool
Manchester City will be 11 points off top position if Liverpool can overcome Brighton this afternoon at Anfield.
Despite having 77% possession and 24 shots, Manchester City struggled to break through the defensive lines of the home side.
Mahrez, Silva, Jesus, Sterling…just some of the creative players in the Manchester City side who failed to put Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka under as much pressure as they needed to-with only 9 shots on target, Guardiola will be frustrated in his team’s poor performance going forward.
With Newcastle sitting back, City lacked the necessary movement to get past the home defenders and the players without possession were too static for side attempting to close the gap on league leaders Liverpool.
