New Everton manager Duncan Ferguson wins his first game in charge as Everton beat Chelsea 3-1 in the Premier League.
A brace from Dominick Calvert-Lewin and a Richarlison header was enough for Everton to win the game, despite Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic pulling one back for his side.
Richarlison opened the scoring for his side with a Ferguson like header after a pinpoint Drijbil Sidibe cross from the right-hand side.
Calvert-Lewin doubled Everton’s lead after bullying both Chelsea central defenders and passing the ball past the onrushing Kepa.
The young English striker had a great game and finished off Everton’s superb day out at Goodison Park.
Kepa poorly threw the ball to Everton winger Theo Walcott, leading to a number of mistakes in the Chelsea box and the ball ended up finding its way to the 22-year-old who tapped it in.
Kovacic, arguably Chelsea’s best player, showed great composure to slot the ball into the Everton goal with a precise, powerful strike outside of the box, but it wasn’t enough to get his side a point let alone three.
Chelsea couldn’t handle Everton’s press all game and it was clear the home side gave everything for their new boss.
The away side failed to get the likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount into the game, which led to Chelsea only achieving 4 shots on target-Everton had 7 on target and looked like a new team under Ferguson.
Fergie Time for Everton
Duncan Ferguson’s return to Everton will definitely be a memorable one.
Following each of his side’s three goals was a euphoric run down the side-line by the new Everton manager who showed how emotionally invested he is in the football club.
Ferguson scored 60 goals in 239 Premier League appearances for Everton.
The former Scottish and Everton striker was delighted with the performance from his players: “I think we kept our shape well. I thought all the players were fantastic.
“Three fantastic points for us and that’s all I was looking at-it’s unbelievable! An unbelievable experience and I’ll never forget it.
“I’m here for as long as they want me here-I’m here for Everton.”
But Ferguson maintained his stance that the challenge as Everton manager will not be an easy road: “It’s one game one result [let’s not get too ahead of ourselves].”
Sticky patch for Chelsea
In the other dugout, Frank Lampard was disappointed with his team’s performance.
“We’ve got to do more than we did.
“Matching work rate is one thing, but winning headers and second balls is another.”
Lampard then gave his view on the comical errors for Everton’s third.
“It’s a poor mistake-Kepa to Theo and then a couple of other errors.
“They got in our box a few times and sloppy mistakes helped them, and we got in their box a lot but didn’t shoot,” said Lampard who clearly highlighted Chelsea’s main problem in the match.
3 defeats in 4 and Chelsea still remain to keep a clean sheet on the road in the Premier League this season, Chelsea have ended up in a sticky patch of their own.
But is the end of the transfer ban the break Chelsea need to maybe get that extra bit of talent to help them out this season?
Man of the Match: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)
Calvert-Lewin was a menace against Chelsea all game.
His tremendous work ethic prevented the away side from playing out from the back, and when called on he dispatched his efforts as Ferguson would’ve done in his playing days-he should’ve had a hattrick, but I’m sure he wont care about that now.
The 22-year-old kept Kepa busy with 4 of his 6 shots being on target, but his 11 aerial duels won were just as important to aid for his sides win.
What's next for both sides?
Everton are away to Manchester United in the league on Sunday, 15 December in their next match.
Chelsea will be looking to bounce back when they host Bournemouth in the Premier League next Saturday at 3pm, after a home Champions League group game against Lille on Tuesday evening.
