A calamitous Everton play Chelsea on Saturday in the Premier League, at Goodison Park, which will be caretaker Duncan Ferguson’s first game in charge of the home side after Marco Silva was sacked.
Following Liverpool’s 5-2 thrashing of Everton in the Merseyside derby midweek, Marco Silva was sacked by the Everton hierarchy and former striker Duncan Ferguson has been appointed the caretaker manager ahead of their clash against Chelsea.
Ferguson scored 60 goals in 239 Premier League appearances for Everton, and believes it isn’t “realistic” to expect to get the managerial role on a permanent basis.
“I think the club will find a really top manager to come,” he said.
“It is a dream of mine to be the Everton manager, but let’s be realistic.”
Everton have lost their past three Premier League fixtures and have fallen into the bottom three.
Further up the table in 4th place is Chelsea, who’ve recently overcome a sticky patch in their form-Chelsea had only one win in five before their 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday.
Team News
Everton's injury woes in central midfield look set to continue, with Fabian Delph ruled out for a fifth game with a thigh problem.
Defender Yerry Mina is a doubt after sustaining an injury at Anfield on Wednesday, while captain Seamus Coleman remains out.
Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is expected to feature despite being substituted against Aston Villa.
Midfielder Ross Barkley is back in contention following illness.
Head to Head
Everton's 2-0 home win against Chelsea last season was their first in seven meetings in all competitions (D2, L4).
The Toffees have lost just once at Goodison Park in the past five encounters-they can secure consecutive league victories in this fixture for the first time since November 1994.
Chelsea have not scored against Everton in the Premier League since a 2-0 home victory in August 2017.
Prediction: Everton 0-2 Chelsea
Will Ferguson’s arrival spark a sudden change in form? No, but that doesn’t mean to say we won’t see an improved Toffee’s side.
Being a former player, Ferguson will preach to his players how important it is to get back to winning ways to push Everton out of the relegation zone.
However, Frank Lampard’s Chelsea is one of the worst teams to try and get a result against this season, and now striker Tammy Abraham is back after his injury to add further problems to Ferguson’s long list.
